Biography

I am a creative photographer & digital artist based in Guernsey, Channel Islands. My work now concentrates exclusively within this area of photographic art and it is an area I enjoy immensely.

I try to find inspiration from all areas of life; looking at everyday objects or situations with a creative eye will often help.

Once the concept of the image is in mind, I will combine elements of traditional photography along with a whole variety of art and craft techniques to bring the image closer to my original idea. The whole process is very much experimental with a

‘hands on’ type of approach; many of my backgrounds used in the images are little more than scraps of painted cardboard or rotten wood, a vivid and some may say warped imagination can be a bonus. I have always believed that the ability to see creatively has to be the best gift any photographer can hope for and this is something I strive to achieve. My aim when creating new images is to bleed the colours and loose much of the sharpness; this probably contradicts the objectives of most photographers who will strive to achieve optimum clarity. The camera and the computer should in my view be utilised as tools in the image making process and I never allow them to control input into the final picture. The finished image can take several hours to create and on many occasions evolves along the way into a totally different image. When I feel the work is complete it is printed using high quality fine art giclée papers, generally a lightly textured paper is used which I feel is ideal for images of this style.

A lot of my energy is now directed towards creating new images to compete in the many national and international photographic salons that take place, these events are a perfect stage for photographic art and I am very fortunate to have been awarded numerous gold medals in recognition of my work. As from March 2010, I now serve on the ‘Visual Arts’ panel of the Royal Photographic Society, assessing potential Associateship and Fellowship panels. I also enjoy presenting illustrated talks on my work at various venues across the UK. A very busy diary of lectures is planned, dates and venues can be viewed from the appropriate section of this website. Invitations to judge photographic salons at national and international level are always very rewarding and this is an area I very much enjoy.
